Biography

Andrew C. Johnston is a non-resident senior fellow at the Civitas Institute. He is also an assistant professor of economics at the University of California, Merced and a research affiliate at IZA-Institute of Labor Economics and JPAL-North America which is based at MIT.

His primary interests are in public economics and labor, with a focus on American poverty. His research examines the effects of unemployment insurance on the labor market, as well as how to improve the quality of public schools to provide better and broader opportunities. His work has been published in the Journal of Political Economy, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, and The Journal of Human Resources. He received his Ph.D. in applied economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
